Over the last few years halogen ovens have exploded in popularity. Whilst on the surface they might not be the sexiest kitchen gadget, they certainly are practical. They cook faster than a conventional oven, use far less electricity and are significantly easier to clean.

Many people are finding it is much more cost effective to reheat food using their halogen cooker. There’s no need to fire up an expensive electric oven or microwave your food to death anymore.

These devices have come a long way since their first debut on teleshopping nearly 10 years ago. The number of brand names offering halogen devices has gone from handful to dozens. This has made choosing the right one quite tricky. Below we’ve created a guide reviewing the best devices currently available.

Halogen Oven Reviews – Our Top Picks for 2019

Andrew James Halogen Oven

It seemed fitting to start with the best-selling oven on the market. The Andrew James Halogen oven has been an Amazon best seller year after year and it really deserves it. The most striking feature of this oven when compared to its competitors is the digital controls. Andrew James has created something you would be proud to have in your kitchen with its modern and easy to use dials.

This device comes with a hinged lid, which makes it incredibly easy to access the food, without having to worry about burning your kitchen counter.

How Much Electricity Does It Use?

For those concerned about electricity costs, the Andrew James uses 0.867 kWh at 200C, whilst a standard oven will generally use upwards of 2kWh. Andrew James have also stated that their oven will cook foods up to 40% faster than your traditional oven. This means you’ll be able to cook things faster whilst using significantly less electricity.

What About Cleaning It?

I’m sure we have all had nightmares at the thought of cleaning our traditional oven. The Andrew James relives us of this torture by including a self-cleaning function. No scrubbing is required on your part. Simply use a bit of water in the oven and activate it.

What accessories are included?

Compared to its competitors the Andrew James come with a lubricious number of accessories. These are:

  • Spare bulb
  • Glass bowl
  • High rack
  • Low rack
  • Tongs
  • Skewers
  • Rice bowl
  • Steamer tray
  • Baking tray
  • Bread rack
  • Extender ring

VonShef Halogen Oven

VonShef have been gaining ground in the kitchen appliance space over the last few years and have created a solid halogen cooker competitor to the Andrew James.

Whilst the cooking controls may be slightly more traditional than the Andrew James, that does not make it any less functional, especially considering it is nearly half the price. It includes two easy to use dials, one for temperature and another for timing.

What Accessories are Included?

It comes with a wide array of accessories to assist you in your kitchen. These include:

  • Extender ring
  • Steamer
  • Frying pan
  • Bread rack
  • High rack
  • Low rack
  • Tongs
  • Skewers
  • Lid holder

Unfortunately, it lacks a hinged lid, which we loved on other models, but we think given the price it is still great value for money.

Sentik Halogen Oven

The Sentik is one of the best valued models one the market at the moment. Unfortunately, this price comes with several sacrifices. By opting for this model, you will have to give up numerous accessories, hinged lid and build quality that other models provide.

For some buyers these won’t be huge issues. Many people won’t need the sheer number of accessories that come with other models.

One thing that you should keep in mind, is the fact that it does not include an extender ring, which we consider one of the most essential additions.

At the end of the day we think the Sentik is priced appropriately but we would advise you spend a little more to get a significantly higher quality product.

JML Halowave

The JML Halowave is a huge improvement on its predecessor which was meet with mixed reviews. They appear to have worked hard to create a solid competitor to the Andrew James by matching it on accessories, functionality and styling.

JML includes a hinged lid for easy access, a digital controls and excellent styling. We feel it is a much more modern take when compared to some of its competitors.

What Accessories are Included?

JML has included the following accessories:

  • High rack
  • Low rack
  • Spindle
  • Forks
  • Tongs
  • Airfrying basket
  • Oil sprayer
  • Frying pan
  • Steak rack
  • Skewer drum
  • Roasting pan
  • Recipe book

Although the JML is in a similar price bracket to some of the other ovens it is lacking a crucial function. This device cannot be extended using the extension ring accessory. This may not be an issue for many consumers. We feel the ability to raise the height of your halogen oven is crucial.

In Conclusion

You have a huge amount of choice when it comes to choosing a device but we highly recommend the Andrew James Halogen Oven. Whilst other devices come close they tend to be lacking important features. Such as the ability to increase the height of your device witth the extender ring or the hinged lid.

How Do They Work?

Truth be told these ovens aren’t too dissimilar from a traditional kitchen oven. Although there are some clear advantages when it comes to electricity usage and portability.

Most devices will consist of a few key components. A large glass bowl, a halogen bulb and a fan to circulate the heat evenly throughout the cooking area. The heat produced by the halogen bulb is instantaneous so there is no need to preheat these devices.

You will need to choose the right attachment for whatever you are cooking to allow the air to circulate throughout the food.

Halogen Oven VS. Air Fryer

There are several similarities between these two devices, namely in the amount of oil they produce and in some cases the way they produce the heat.

We believe a halogen oven is far more versatile when it comes to what it can cook. Other than some minor space constraints, which can be solved with an extender ring, you will be able to use it just like your regular oven.

Can I Reheat Food with It?

Absolutely! One of our favorite features of the halogen oven is its ability to quickly and cheaply reheat food. We personally found it very similar to reheating food in a traditional oven, at the speed of a microwave, without the uneven temperature a microwave can sometimes leave.
